Determining the best small SUV's, however, can be quite difficult. That is mainly because different people look at different things. However, if we look solely at how many vehicles have been sold, it is possible to determine the best small SUV's in terms of popularity if nothing else.

List of the Best Small SUV's Based on Sales:

Jeep Renegade, with 62,294 Sales

This is a car with personality. It is a crossover, subcompact SUV that comes in four different trims (off-road-ready Trailhawk, Limited, Latitude, and Sport). It comes with either a four-liter turbo engine, or an aspirated engine. Additionally, it is available in automatic and manual transmissions, and in all-wheel and front-wheel drive.

Mazda CX-5, with 62,442 Sales

The CX-5 is both stylish and sporty. It comes in three trim levels (Grand Touring, Touring, and Sport). It also has a four cylinder, 2.0 liter engine, which is only available as a manual in the Sport trim. The other trims have a four-cylinder, 2.5 liter engine with automatic transmission. It can come with all-wheel drive.

Jeep Patriot, with 75,405 Sales

This is quite an old vehicle and quite boxy as well. However, its High Altitude, Latitude, 75th Anniversary Edition, Sport SE, and Sport trims make it a popular option. There are automatic and manual transmissions and all-wheel and front-wheel drive in both its four cylinder engines.

Subaru Forester, with 95,111 Sales

This is a really compact SUV, with the turbocharged 2.XT model and the 2.5i. All-wheel drive is provided as standard. Four trims exist on the 2.5i, being the Touring, Limited, Premium, and base. The 2.0XT, however, is available in Touring and Premium.

Jeep Cherokee, with 118,103 Sales

The Cherokee is available in a V6 or in a four-cylinder engine, as well as having all-wheel and front-wheel drive. It also has nine different trims to choose from. This ranges from the luxurious Overland to the basic Sport.

Chevrolet Equinox, with 143,202 Sales

The Equinox comes in a V6 and four-cylinder model. It also has either all-wheel or front-wheel drive. It is a compact model that comes in four trims: L, LS, LT, and LTZ.

Ford Escape, with 181,638 Sales

The Escape comes in three versions, Escape S, Escape SE, and Escape Titanium. The main differences between those three are the engine size, cylinders, and front- or all-wheel drive. It even comes with a turbocharged engine as well.

Nissan Rogue, with 182,181 Sales

Last but not least, there is the Nissan Rogue, one of two Rogue models. The Select is the older generation, which is available for those on a tighter budget. This comes in S trim only. However, in 2014, the Rogue was re-designed, with the SV and SL trims seeing the greatest changes. It is also available in front- and all-wheel drive.
