Pharmacology is the study of actions of drugs, whether it be medicine or toxin, and their different effects on the body. Pharmacology deals with how drugs interact with the actual living systems and organs in our body.  Pharmacology also revolves around coming up with new drugs for treatment of different medical conditions and how they can be beneficial or harmful to the body. Pharmacology is an extremely vital aspect in the study of pharmacy.

It deals with coming up of new medicinal innovations, their compositions of drugs and how they could provide therapeutic value. Students who are taking up a degree in pharmacy will also have to study pharmacology so they will know how different amounts of medicinal drugs can affect the body as well as how they are administered into the body.  Pharmacology is included in the curriculum of a pharmacy degree.  A degree in pharmacy is not the same as a degree in Pharmacology. It focuses more on the study of medicines for treatment, as opposed to prescribing medication.

Pharmacology degrees are offered by various schools.  To be a pharmacologist, you need to enroll in a degree in pharmacology.  Many biological and physical science related subjects are what compose the curriculum of pharmacology degrees.  In the last year of the program, students are provided the extensive understanding of the molecular structure of how medicines and drugs act ,as well as cellular and organ systems. During this final stage of their course, they will have the opportunity to learn how drugs are used to treat certain medical conditions such as stroke, depression, and many more. Aside from this, internships are possible in a pharmaceutical firm where the student can put his learning into real world practice.

Pharmacology degree programs offer great diversity and cover the cutting-edge specialties of modern pharmacology. Graduates of a degree in pharmacology have employment opportunities in hospitals, universities, government institutions, and of course, in the pharmaceutical industry.  At this stage, they could already apply for a job as researcher and teacher in several universities as well as in the sales and marketing of a drug industry or even into medical writing. Thus, they can even pursue teaching or become physicians, health administrators, professors, researchers, or any combination of these professional careers.

Pharmacologists usually find employment in big pharmaceutical companies which produce and sell the drugs to various pharmacies worldwide.  Before a pharmaceutical company, they can sell a drug, and perform clinical trials to ensure the therapeutic potential of each drug. It takes years and a tremendous amount of money to do clinical trials before the sale of a drug is allowed and approved.  It is the job of a pharmacologist to determine if the new drug invented has improved or worsened the condition of a patient.

Pharmacologists who are part of the team performing clinical trials, particularly in the design of the drugs, and making sure of their safety metabolism in a selection of people, are intensely sought after. This career also offers a very lucrative compensation and generally full benefits to go along.

Students have the option to choose from which type of school setting they would enroll.  They can choose between in campus setting or apply in an online pharmacology degree program.  Applying in an online pharmacology degree is not only convenient but is also more affordable. As per the quality of the education is concerned, what you learn in the traditional campus settings is just the same in what you can learn in an online education. It's up to the student to put the work in and actually apply themselves.
